Obama Needs to visit Mexico ASAP

 title= title=

McCain's visit today to Canada, got me thinking. If he could visit Canada for the day.
Then Obama should visit Mexico pronto and before McCain does to solidfy his strength with the Latino community. I would strongly urge that he visit's Mexico at lest twice before the fall.

Of all the challenges that presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will face to win the November elections, one of the biggest ones will be conquering the Hispanic vote.

It won't be easy as it looks. McCain will throw everything at this.

Sen. Obama didn't do well with Latinos in the primary season, and he can't win the White House without their massive support.

Obama's biggest weakness within the Latino community lies with foreign-born Hispanics, who make up nearly half of the estimated 13 million registered Hispanic voters. All of this poses a huge challenge to Obama.

To win in November, he needs not only to win the Hispanic vote in key swing states -- such as Florida, New Mexico and Colorado -- but to do so by larger-than-usual margins.

"The Latino vote will be more important than ever in this year's election,"
says Sergio Bendixen, a Democratic pollster.
"The election may be decided by Florida, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada, where the Hispanic vote can decide who wins in those states."
According to Bendixen, Obama needs to win the Hispanic vote by a margin of more than 55 percent in Florida, and by more than 65 percent in New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada. And if likely Republican nominee Sen. John McCain gives the Democrats a fight in New Jersey, California and Pennsylvania, Obama will need to do even better than that in these states.
Will Obama be able to do that? A poll released last week by Democracy Corps, the James Carville-Stan Greenberg group, shows that Obama beats McCain among Hispanics by 60 percent to 34 percent. A Gallup poll also released last week shows Obama is ahead among Hispanics by 62 percent to 29 percent.

Many Democratic strategists are hailing these figures as a good sign for Obama. A new report by the New Democrat Network shows that the number of Hispanic voters in this year's primary season has tripled since the 2004 primaries, and that the Democratic party has increased its share of Hispanic voters by 66 percent over the past four years.

"The latest national polls show that Obama is showing surprising strength among Latino voters, given the weakness that he showed in the primaries,"
says New Democrat Network president Simon Rosenberg.
"There is a new dynamic in the Hispanic electorate: We are seeing a very high level of civic participation, and a big swing toward the Democrats."

Republicans counter that McCain needs to get close to the 38 percent to 40 percent of the Hispanic vote that was won by President Bush in the last two elections, and that he is not too far from that goal.

"This contest is only beginning and we have five months to remind Hispanics that John McCain has always stood by us and taken political risks for our community, whereas Obama has little if any record of supporting the community,"
said Ana Navarro, co-chair of McCain's Hispanic Advisory Council.

Obama will onviously try to win Hispanic voters by focusing on issues that most affect them, such as the economy, universal health care and the war in Iraq. McCain will most likely engage in a negative campaign to stress Obama's lack of experience, and depict him as weak on national security in an increasingly dangerous world.

I said this before and I will say it again. Minority communities love to be referenced and they rememeber who says it. What greater mark of respect than a visit to Mexico? Part of the trick from now on, will be just to show up.

Obama will have to go out of his way to win the Hispanic vote by a landslide.
Obama has never been to Latin America.

He needs to visit very soon. If only for 1 day and come back again before the fall.

sorry but i'd rather him visit cities in the US with strong to ties with mexico. Visiting mexico versus visiting Hispanic strongholds in the US? naw. He dissed alot of Hispanic communities in the primaries  because he wrote them off as Clinton wins.

Re: Obama Needs to visit Mexico ASAP (none / 0)

I do believe that Clinton was running stronger with the Latino communities, but I trust most of them to come home to Obama.  As part of his 50 State Strategy I hope that he even includes those states that are "in the bag" like California.  Texas, California, Arizona, and Nevada have some very strong Latino communities where Obama can make his case.

Why go to Mexico?  They don't vote, the Latino community votes and that is where Obama should be.

Re: Obama Needs to visit Mexico ASAP (1.00 / 0)

and what does he do about his NAFTA stance he had against in the primaries. He gave no room in when he said ...

"I have always opposed NAFTA."

"I don't think NAFTA has been good for America - and I never have."

The Mexican government, certainly (2.00 / 4)

But the Mexican government no more looks out for the welfare of the Mexican people than our own government looks out for ours.

NAFTA has been bad for Mexico's environment, rural farmers, worker's unions, economy, and local sovereignty.

Re: Obama Needs to visit Mexico ASAP (2.00 / 1)

yeah they liked to be referenced but not passed up for a visit to a foreign country. saying this as a member of the hispanic communiy, he wont gain any respect by pandering to Mexico for votes. many foreign born hispanics consider themselves american after living here so long.

Re: Obama Needs to visit Mexico ASAP (none / 0)

First:

Obama is leading more than two to one among Hispanic voters against McCain.

Second:

Mexicans do not vote in the Presidential election.  Mexican-American U.S. citizens do (among numerous other latino groups; amongst all citizens as a whole).  How, exactly, is simply going to Mexico going to solidify any support behind Obama among voters who do not, in fact, live in Mexico?

Those Florida numbers are insane.  The Cuban-Americans there are some of the most hardcore Republicans in the whole state.

Re: Obama Needs to visit Mexico ASAP (2.00 / 1)

What the numbers show is that people were looking at primary results as somehow reflective of GE results. Just because a group of voters prefers one candidate over another in a primary does not mean they won't favor the other candidate of the same party when it comes to the GE.

Obama is running for office in the US. He no more needs to visit Mexico to garner votes among Hispanics than he needs to visit Israel to get Jewish votes. He needs to campaign right here at  home.

Having said that, I have to mojo you for trying to come up with ideas to improve his chances.

I'm not sure exactly how you meant that comment to sound, but how it does sound is incredibly demeaning and racist.

You realize all Latinos aren't Mexican, right? (2.00 / 1)

Here in New Mexico, a significant amount of Latinos consider themselves "Spanish" instead of Mexican.  Especially in Northern New Mexico.

I know there are significant populations of people from Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and other latino nations.

Traveling to Mexico in and of itself doesn't mean Latinos are going to vote for him.  If he has the right stances on the issues we will vote for him.  Which I believe he does on many issues, so I will be voting for him.  Whether or not he travels to Mexico.

PS: I think his time would be much better spent in NEW Mexico.
